Karaoke

Gorillas in Your Midst will hold a karaoke from 8-10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the Dellinger Underground. A range of songs is available to choose from and students may bring their own CDs as well. Giveaways and refreshments will be provided. Call 235-4062 for more information.

Valentine’s Day raffle

Gorillas in Your Midst is selling raffle tickets for a 4-foot-tall stuffed monkey as part of the organization’s fundraising efforts for travel and lodging expenses for a conference. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased at Hartman Hall, room 209 or by calling Ext. 4062. Tickets will also be sold at the “Day Before Valentine’s Day Flower Sale” on Friday, Feb. 13, in the Yates Hall Lobby until 3 p.m. when the winner will be announced.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake

Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Bigs at PSU invite residents to “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Holiday Lanes. The event will help raise money for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Two sessions, one at 2:30 p.m. and one at 10 p.m. are open for teams of four to six.

Career Day

The annual Spring Career Day will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Student Recreation Center. Business attire is strongly suggested. Students in need of appropriate clothing are encouraged to visit the Career Clothes Closet in Horace Mann, room 203.
More than 90 companies are expected to attend the event. A list of all attending companies is available on the Pitt State website.

Fitness classes

Non-credit fitness classes have started at the Student Recreation Center. Students may now sign up for extreme fitness at 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesdays or yoga at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Spring convocation

The first spring convocation will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall, located in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.
The event is open to all students and staff. Attendees may fill out blank question cards for Steve Scott, university president, beforehand, which will be answered on-stage during the convocation. Topics such as the 2015 legislative session and upcoming Bicknell Center events will also be discussed.

Host families needed

About 30 international students are in need of host families for the semester. Host families do not involve financial or live-in support, but provide friendship and assistance in adjusting to American culture.

Little Gorillas Preschool

The Pitt State Little Gorillas Preschool is accepting applications for its waiting list for the 2015-2016 preschool year. The preschool is located in the Family and Consumer Sciences building and is open to children ages 3 to 5. Children must be 2 years of age to be placed on the waiting list.
Tuition rates for a three-day week are $500 and $550 for a four-day week. The preschool offers two sessions per day, one from 8:30 -11:15 a.m. and 1-3:45 p.m.

Library future vision meetings

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend and provide input for the future vision of Axe Library on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Four sessions are available starting at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
All sessions will take place in the lower level of the Wilkinson Alumni Center.

Academic Honors

The deadline for turning in applications for the Departmental Academic Honors Program is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6.
The Honors Program is designed to challenge students with superior academic abilities by providing opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of an academic area through independent study and close faculty-student association.
Students must maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA and complete a minimum of nine semester hours of credit designated as taken for honors.
Applications should be turned into Michelle Hensley in the Registrar’s Office in Russ Hall, room 103.
